A Bank Holiday is the perfect time for a jolly trip out of town for a spot of culture. Rather than a stately home, on Monday we took the extra day off to check out the modernist Towner gallery in Eastbourne in all its white, bright, beautiful glory.

Designed by Rick Mather Architects, it’s the akin to walking around a Corbusier creation, but on the sunny south coast. The art ain’t bad either. We saw Familiar Visions, photos and paintings and photos by Eric and James Ravilious, but from 25 September to 21 November there’s an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs which be sure to generate a letter or two to the Eastbourne Herald… Afterwards, soak up soaring views of the South Downs from the vast windows, free activities for kids – and wedges of home-made cake in the café – the perfect stylish day out. Jo, sub-editor
