How do aeroplanes fly? How do you spell your name in semaphore or sign language? What is the structure of the human lung and the Planet Earth? And, crucially, how do you make pancakes? These are just the sort of questions answered by the Visual Aid project, the brainchild of London-based graphic design company Draught Associates.

Originally in two books – Visual Aid: Stuff You’ve Forgotten, Things You Never Thought You Knew and Lessons You Didn’t Quite Get Around to Learning and Visual Aid: You Can Never Know Enough Stuff – the glorious designs are now available in poster form. Perfect for fielding difficult questions from toddlers, providing far more satisfying answers than ‘ask your father’. Heck, who are we kidding, we need these for ourselves – the Livingetc Christmas party on Friday will now have many balloon animals in attendance.
