Look! A mobile phone that flips open to reveal a keyboard! Look! The Internet on a telly! Actually, look! The Internet! These gift guide pages from turn-of-the-century Livingetc looked like Star Trek at the time, now they look very quaint indeed. Although, even if it is a pretty colour, can we apologise to anyone who got an extension cable for their Christmas present because of us. Oh the romance!

While you’re in a futuristic mood, save precious seconds with this letter opener – perhaps the first documented evidence of electronic mail…

 

Tie a bit of organza together with an orange feather boa to create… well, erm, to create what exactly? Sorry late-nineties Livingetc, but this is teetering on the brink of being as bad as the ‘boudoir’ that Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen did on Changing Rooms.

Break the rules: Colour co-ordination’s a no-no. Create a riot of shades and patterns. Sheer indulgence: Hang two lengths of fabric and tie back with a boa. Blitz bedside tables: Put up a shelf and trim with beaded ribbon.

As well as prima donna sofas and haughty chairs, Livingetc stylists in the late Nineties used to have to deal with humans in shoots. But, going by the look of this collection, they were a lazy bunch – very happy to lounge around eating marshmallows (nice ‘adultgrow’, above), or catch up on some reading perhaps…

Do not adjust your sets, we did actually publish this article in 1999. Yes, she has tea lights strapped to her. But it gets worse…
